Dr. Velma Villegas has served public school systems in Texas and California for more than 40 years both in teaching and administrative capacities. Currently, Villegas is Interim Department Chair of the Department of Curriculum & Kinesiology and Special Assistant for Teaching & Academics at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. Prior to joining the university, Villegas was their Educational Consultant and Superintendent of Schools for Southwest Independent School District (2005-2010) and held administrative positions for Spring Branch Independent School District, Sacramento City Joint Unified School District, and Harlandale Independent School District.
Her current and past community involvement includes service as a board member for P-16 Plus Council, Challenger Program, Boy Scouts of America, and the public library system in Woodland, California. Villegas has also served on the Teacher Preparation Design Committee for Texas A&M-San Antonio. She was awarded Superintendent of the Year (2008-2009) by the Texas Education Computer Association, Women of the Southern Sector by the Southside Chamber of Commerce in 2007, the City Year Hidden Hero Award in 2006 and Leadership Award for the 2001-2002 year by the Sacramento City Joint Unified School Board in California.
Villegas holds a BA in Business and Economics from Texas Women's University (Denton, Texas), a Masters of Arts in Educational Administration from San Jose State University (California) and a PhD in Leadership and Human Behavior from United States International University (USIU) in San Diego, California.
