Resident Camp @ La Jita

Summer Camp in Texas Camp La Jita

Resident Camp at La Jita

Texas Camp "La Jita" is a Native American phrase meaning “Precious Possession,” aptly chosen as the name of GSSWT’s Girl Scout camp for kids, that rests on 236 acres of Texas Hill Country land along the beautiful Sabinal River near Utopia. The John F. Camp family donated the land in 1946 for summer retreat Camp La Jita and thousands of happy Texas campers have enjoyed it during the camp’s 68-year history.

Accredited Logo for Texas Summer CampsCamp La Jita is proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), with whom we have received 100 percent satisfaction for the last four site visits, which take place every three years. Developed exclusively for the camp profession, this nationally recognized program focuses on program quality, health and safety issues, and requires us to review every facet of our operation. The display of the ACA logo is a privilege reserved for camps which have met the criteria.

Camp is a special place of self-discovery, laughter, fun and personal growth in a healthy outdoor environment. Girls plan their own adventurous program as they break away from their home routine and create fun for themselves at this kids camp. They gain self-confidence and enjoy a shared independence under the guidance of trained camp staff.

During their one- or two-week stay, girls will reside in a rustic cabin in one of camp’s seven living units. Each unit is equipped with showers and flush toilets and is continually supervised by two or more counselors who are housed close to the girls’ cabins.

Each day, girls spend time at a variety of activities and have a rest period after lunch during the warmer part of the day to write letters, read or play board games. Afternoons are filled with more activities, dinner, late night swimming, stargazing and singing by the campfire.

Kapers (aka camp chores) are a part of each day’s activities and help girls develop a sense of responsibility and appreciation for keeping the Texas summer retreat camp neat and clean. Meals are provided three times a day and served in a central dining hall, except when girls plan a cookout in their unit. Afternoon snacks are also provided.
