Volunteer as a troop leader: Guide a group of Girl Scouts by creating a fun, safe space. We’ll help you get started with easy-to-use tools like the Girl Scout Experience Box and ready-made Troop Year Plans so you can focus on fun, growth, and connection.

Be a supportive adult volunteer: Help girls thrive by assisting with meetings, activities, or special events, no matter your schedule or experience.

Get involved on your terms. Choose a role that fits your time and interests—from leading a troop to lending a hand behind the scenes.

No previous experience is required to support girls as they build confidence, skills, and lifelong friendships through the Girl Scout experience. Your local Girl Scout Council can help get you started.

The Girl Scout membership year runs from October 1, 2026, to September 30, 2027. Annual membership dues are $65 for girl members and $30 for adult members. Additional local fees and discounts may apply. Financial aid may be available. Girl Scout memberships must be renewed annually.

Ways to Volunteer

Whether you can give a few hours, a few weeks, or a few months, volunteering with Girl Scouts is flexible and fun.

You can volunteer at the community level—an area that contains multiple troops—or at the troop/council level. All official troop and community volunteers must accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

Troop and Council Volunteers

Troop Co-leaders toggle arrow

Work with a group of girls and mentor them as they make new friends and develop connections that will last a lifetime.

Troop Camp Leadership toggle arrow

Outdoor experiences allow girls to discover their strengths and skills, connect with their environment, and take action to make the world a better place. Each troop needs one adult who is Troop Camp Leadership (TCL) certified to take girls camping. Men and women 18 and older are eligible but must have a current Girl Scout membership and cleared background check on file with Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas. Initial certification consists of a two-part blended learning course that includes an online portion in gsLearn (two knowledge checks with passing grades of 80% and above on both) and an in-person skills session (overnight campout) at location TBD. Recertification is an online training in gsLearn with knowledge checks requiring passing grades of 80% and above.

Troop Nut Manager: Handle all aspects of a troop’s annual Fall Product Program and work directly with the Community Nut Manager. Is the parent/caregiver’s first point of contact for issues or questions.
Troop Cookie Manager: Handle all aspects of the annual Girl Scout Cookie Program at the individual troop level. Work directly with Troop Money Manager and Troop Co-Leaders, and Community Cookie Manager. Parent/caregiver’s first point of contact for issues or questions.

Troop Money Manager, Co-Signer: Assist with money management to keep the troop running smoothly from week to week.

Helpers, Short-term & Seasonal toggle arrow

Troop Helper: You’ll introduce girls to new experiences and help them to take the lead and change the world. You will be their cheerleader, guide, and mentor, helping them develop crucial skills and confidence to launch them into a lifetime of leadership.
Short-term Volunteer: Can’t commit to being a co-leader but want to use some of your time to impact girls in Girl Scouts? This role is perfect for adults with extra time on their hands, students interested in earning a few community service hours, or corporate volunteer teams. Council Facilitator: Help facilitate learning opportunities and mentor volunteers.
Camp/Season Volunteer: Help girls explore nature and discover a love for the outdoors.

Community Volunteers

Community Chair toggle arrow

Keep the community team in the loop and get everyone connected as the lead volunteer in the community. Work to engage new and existing troop leaders and other volunteers, recruit new girls and adults, successfully meet goals that in turn support the overall efforts of Girl Scouts, and provide for a rich, memorable, and important Girl Scout experience for girls and adults within the community.

Outdoors and Specialty toggle arrow

Community Outdoor Coordinator: Establish, plan, and implement volunteer-led outdoor experiences for girls that are aligned to the Girl Scouts Leadership Experience such as day camps, camporees, encampments, or other council or community camps.
OPALS (Optional Positions at Large/Specialty): These specialty positions work within a community to meet its goals and may be long-term or short-term volunteers. Examples of OPALS are lifeguards, archery instructors, STEM expert, community service organizer, faith-based coordinator, translator, etc. Help where needed in community and works primarily with Program Coordinator.

Community Cookie Manager: Handle all aspects of the community’s annual Girl Scout Cookie Program and work directly with the council.
Community Nut Manager: Handle all aspects of the community’s Fall Product Program and work directly with the council.

Community Membership Recruitment Coordinator: Plan and carry out back-to-school and recruitment events for adults and girls. They organize new members into troops securing troop leadership or place girls into existing troops or pathways.

Community Money Manager & Co-Signer: Manage the community funds and guide leaders in proper financial management of troop funds.

Experiences and Resource Center toggle arrow

Community Activity Coordinator: Plan and implement events at the area/community level that provide high-quality experiences for girls and are aligned to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
Community Volunteer Experience Coordinator: Develop a culture of appreciation in assigned community by formally and informally recognizing volunteers and local businesses/organizations year-round for their service and support of Girl Scouts as well as educate new and returning members of required and available adult learning opportunities.
Community Volunteer Resource Coordinator: Coordinate and provide learning opportunities in their community during the membership year, encourage Volunteer Toolkit use and year plan creation with troop leaders, and promote council adult learning opportunities, including, but not limited to, CPR/First Aid/AED, lifeguard, archery, etc.

Community Communication Coordinator: Manage community communications and social media platforms, ensuring that privacy guidelines are met, accounts depict the community and its members in the best possible light, and Girl Scout brand standards are upheld.
